Basilone Parade

U.S.S. Basilone and Raritan Tributes

The military paid tribute to John by naming a ship after him. An anti-submarine Navy Destroyer, the U.S.S. Basilone was commissioned on July 26th, 1949.

His home town of Raritan honors him every year with a parade. First held in 1981, the parade has been held every year rain or shine, attracting thousands of spectators. It is the pride of the town of Raritan.

John Basilone remains the only soldier (non-officer) in U.S. history to be awarded both The Congressional Medal of Honor and The Navy Cross. He is also the only Medal of Honor winner to go back into combat and be killed in combat.

Basilone Bridge

The Basilone Bridge, which opened in 1953, is on the New Jersey Turnpike (concurrency with Route 95) in the U.S. state of New Jersey spanning the Raritan River. The bridge connects Edison Township on the north with East Brunswick on the south.

The bridge is named after John Basilone, who grew up in nearby Raritan, New Jersey.
